DON’T JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER

The Human Library™ is designed to build a positive framework for conversations that can challenge stereotypes and prejudices through dialogue. It’s a place where real people are on loan to readers. A place where difficult questions are expected, appreciated and answered.

The idea behind The Human Library is to create a safe and positive learning environment where volunteers become ‘human books’ and share their personal stories with ‘readers’ wanting to learn more about that book title. Human Library is a mobile library set up as a space for dialogue and interaction.

Human books are varied in their experiences, appearances, abilities and cultural background. They come in all ages, shapes and sizes. Every book is different and each has a unique story for every reader.

Human Library brings a wealth of volunteerism opportunities for young people. They can participate as either librarians, readers or even books.

Librarians play a crucial role as they are the connectors between the readers and books. They ensure that books are returned in the same condition they were borrowed, and that both readers and books have the best experience possible.

Having a variety of readers and books is equally important, as everyone has a unique story to tell. This gives young people a valuable platform to discover, share and learn in an open and respectful environment.
