Human Library’s Second Birthday!
1 June 2015 - Tricia Francis

The 31 May 2015, marked a very special day for Human Library Malaysia, as we came together with our awesome group of supporters to celebrate 2 years of existence on Malaysian shores. Initially founded in Copenhagen, Denmark in 2000, the Human Library concept only found its way to Malaysia in late May 2013. As part of a global movement now present in over 75 countries, Human Library is essentially an evidence-based innovative method designed to promote dialogue, reduce prejudices, and encourage understanding within the community. This unique concept gives people an opportunity to see life from a different perspective and allows people to have a better understandings of others.

So on the last Sunday of May we decided to organise a mini Human Library session to celebrate and thank all the “human books”, volunteers and friends who have supported this movement over the last 2 years. The venue for this party was the lush, chilled courtyard at D7, Sentul East Design Centre and it was an afternoon well spent as the old and young came together and had the amazing opportunity to read various captivating book titles on offer. Our book catalogue for the afternoon included the usual crowd favourites, Former death row prisoner, Person living with HIV (PLWHIV) and also debuted new books; The Sentul Boy, The Community Leader and Pedigree Social Worker. To explain the experience of a Human Library in words would prove difficult, but to all our readers (old & new) it was an eye-opening experience and the atmosphere on that afternoon suggests they had learnt something valuable and inspiring.

For those who did not manage to join us for this session, don’t worry we will be organising more events in the next couple of months. So always check our Facebook page for updates and latest happenings. https://www.facebook.com/HumanLibraryMY

For some good news, we are currently recruiting new “human books” and librarians as we seek continue to grow this movement. Partners and Collaborators are also welcome to reach out to us.

Quote of the day:

“He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine: as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me”
